IAV – Engineering Competence for the Entire Vehicle – Worldwide

Employing over 3,000 members of staff across the globe, IAV is one of the leading providers of engineering services to the automotive industry. Our core competencies include perfected, production-ready solutions in all areas of powertrain, electronics and vehicle development. IAV carries out advance engineering activities in-house, conducts its own research and preparatory work and operates on an interdisciplinary basis. In addition to its headquarters in Berlin, IAV also operates from other locations in Europe, Asia as well as North and South America.

Our clients include all prominent automobile manufacturers and component suppliers who use our services in the following key areas:

Powertrain-Mechatronics
  • Algorithm development
  • Alternative drives, hybrid drives and alternative fuels
  • Calibration of gasoline and diesel engines
  • Combustion/exhaust/fuel economy
  • Development of injection systems
  • Engine & transmission calibration
  • Powertrain electronics & software
  • Simulation
  • System development

As a recognized development partner to the automotive industry, we work hand in hand with our clients in providing solutions for the powertrain of tomorrow that go far beyond conventional concepts or the common approaches in control engineering.

IAV consistently applies fully integrated, start-to-finish development processes and tools from the early concept formulation stage, in project handling right through to the production-ready solution.

We conduct all the necessary trials on our own test benches (e.g. engine test rigs and roller dynamometers). Doing so, we always keep an eye on cost efficiency and adapt our in-house development tools to meet requirements, such as various HiL/SiL systems, our automated measuring and diagnostic equipment as well as our nnovative simulation and calibration tools. This ensures that our clients always benefit from target-focused and cost-effective project handling.

Powertrain Development
  • Advance engineering
  • Alternative drives
  • Base engine development
  • Cost engineering
  • DMU/Parts list/package
  • Engine mount system/NVH
  • Engine development
  • Powertrain development
  • Powertrain integration
  • Transmission development

The aim in developing new or improving existing engines is to optimize efficiency while at the same time drastically reducing pollutant emissions. We accomplish this
using perfected methods and excellent technical facilities but above all through highly trained and motivated engineers with creative ideas and a realistic eye for what is feasible. From the initial idea to simulation and prototyping, and from component testing to test-rig and road trials, the entire powertrain is developed to production maturity and integrated in the vehicle using state-of-the-art methods.

Vehicle Development
  • Computation and simulation
  • Concept development
  • Design configuration exterior & interior systems
  • Equipment
  • Front end
  • HVA, comfort & NVH
  • Overall vehicle testing
  • Vehicle body development
  • Vibration, acoustics
  • Vehicle safety

AV is the link between the idea and production readiness. Staff from Vehicle Development are in full command of all the necessary process stages – from the initial
concept, computation and design, right through to prototype construction and testing. Once developed, components are required to demonstrate their suitability in
the overall vehicle. We make sure of this by carrying out vibration analyses, acoustics tests, ride-comfort measurements, endurance and crash tests – because only when optimum component interaction is given can the perfect vehicle be produced. This is where our customers benefit from our many years of project experience, also with complex projects.

Vehicle Electronics
  • Chassis and suspension electronics
  • Cockpit electronics/infotainment
  • Comfort electronics
  • Driver information
  • Driver assistance systems
  • Electrical energy management
  • Overall vehicle electronics
  • Safety electronics
  • Telematics
  • Vehicle electrical system development

Developing vehicle electronics always involves integrating a wide range of different systems, components and demands. In addition to meeting and compiling specifications for systems and vehicle electronics, this also includes simulation activities for developing hardware and software. The vehicle electrical system linking electronic components must then undergo system testing. For the virtual model of the overall vehicle, we integrate the geometry of all electronic components as well as the wiring harness and design the necessary housing including wiring aids.

For us, vehicle electronics also cover the field of infotainment. Here, innovative human/machine interfaces (HMI) are just one aspect we address in the vehicle. Driver assistance systems for maximum levels of convenience and safety are another. In addition to SOP activities, we also construct prototypes and test vehicles for our clients as well as prepare and conduct tests for them to the point at which clearance is given for production.
