Modern engines need to do the sheer impossible: They are expected to deliver ever more power from ever lower swept volume, use very little fuel while at the same time being as light as possible. We have now been facing up to these challenges for 30 years – our specialists are currently developing modern injection processes, studying variable valve trains and employing new materials, such as light alloys and plastic, in their development and design work. Using simulation, we make sure at an early stage that the engine can cope with all load situations and reliably meets all demands in relation to friction and wear. In the next step, it must then demonstrate what it is capable of on our numerous test benches – this is where we test all aspects, such as engine-component friction, oil and coolant circuits, the exhaust system as well as noise generation and vibrational behavior.
