P-CRANK

P-CRANK is a program for designing and optimising combustion engine crankshafts quickly and efficiently. The geometry of the crankshaft is generated in the form of a parametric model and represented as a 3D crankshaft model without the need to use a CAD system. It supports in-line, V, VR, boxer and WR engine forms.

Various basic types of the crankshaft's constituent parts (crank web, counterweight, crankshaft journal, etc.) are defined in the program. These basic types and associated parameters are used to describe crankshaft geometry. Data are entered interactively in a graphic pre-process in which geometry changes can be visualised straight away.

P-CRANK is capable of determining the mass characteristics of the crankshaft (mass, volume, centre of gravity, inertia tensor). This can be done for the entire crankshaft as well as for individual components (crank throw, web, journal). The program furthermore determines the imbalance vectors for showing the crankshaft's residual imbalance.

Using mathematical optimisation processes, the crankshaft can be optimised and balanced in relation to given targets (minimisation of mass, bearing force, inertia of mass) and in allowance of secondary conditions (parameter intervals, ceilings for mass and bearing force).

Graphic evaluation of the characteristic kinetostatic values takes place within the post-process by means of graphs (e.g. bearing force, torque, etc.) and animation (crankshaft with active force vectors). The results can be exported in the form of ASCII files. The geometry of the crankshaft can be exported in IGES format, making it available for further processing in the CAD system.
