Variable Gas Nozzle

The variable swirl nozzle is a tool for optimizing combustion. It is an injection nozzle with a variable spray angle for use in the spray-guided combustion process.

Separate delivery through differently sized ports provides the capability of adjusting swirl intensity. In addition to injection pressure and actuation duration, this makes other parameters accessible for calibration. It is used at IAV as part of projects for optimizing combustion.

Advantages:
  • Avoidance of preliminary spray
  • Extended degrees of freedom for the nozzle
  • Capability of implementing spray-guided combustion processes (constant spray angle in wide map areas)

Adjustable parameters:
  • Flow
  • Droplet size
  • Cone angle

Technical specifications:

  • Two differently sized fuel feed lines merging in a swirl chamber
  • Injector continuously fed with small mass flows through feed line A; feed line B can be adjusted
  • Additional adjustable return line for controlling swirl flow intensity and thus cone angle
  • The basic design of the swirl chamber determines the spectrum of adjustable steady-state flows, spray angles and droplet size ranges
