Not only is IAV one of the automotive industry's leading providers of engineering services, the company is also one of Germany's largest converters for gas-powered vehicles. Carrying out conversions in close dialog with vehicle manufacturers, we place primary importance on quality, reliability, optimum drivability and emission behavior.

Crash safety of the tank installation concept is verified under ECE and FMVSS requirements in head-on, lateral and rear-end collision tests. In terms of configuration and mode of operation, the components of the system and the overall vehicle conform to ECE Regulation R110 (-40°C). IAV's concept has also been awarded ECE R115 certification which makes vehicles eligible for homologation across Europe. As part of its conversion activity, IAV handles all aspects of part logistics, vehicle planning, conversion with subsequent quality control and start-up, homologation, warranty, hot line and task force. IAV can draw on over 14 years of experience in developing gas-powered drives. It is on this basis that many QVM* conversions were carried out between 1993 and 2004. As such, IAV will continue to provide all of its clients with expert support and service in the future too.

Gas Tank Installation
Depending on customer specifications and vehicle type, the gas tank is installed, for example, behind the partition to the cargo space, over the rear axle or under the load floor (pick-up and twin-compartment cab). Two underfloor alternatives for closed bodies (for long and short wheelbase) are also available. The different tank installation options can also be combined.

IAV´s Underfloor Concept
IAV's underfloor concept has been devised to meet all safety criteria and ensure unrestricted vehicle use as demanded by Volkswagen´s development department. IAV´s conversion concepts avoid radical modifications to production parts, such as the exhaust system. Installed underfloor, the gas tank does not extend beyond the floor line, thereby ensuring the same ground clearance as provided by standard production vehicles.

Working hand in hand with the TÜV Süd Group and the TÜV Rheinland Group, Berlin/Brandenburg,
IAV has been running training activities since 1995 with a focus on two main areas:

a) Instruction in the technology of CNG-powered vehicles/IAV gas system layout
b) Training course leading to the acquisition of expert status

To date, some 220 businesses have received training in Germany. We would also be pleased to provide training for your service partner or your own workshop.

Tailored Individuality
Whether large family or trade, Multivan or pick-up – we can configure your VW T5 with a bivalent natural gas/gasoline-powered drive system to suit your requirements or application. Just as you request, CNG tanks can either be integrated in the vehicle as the lower-cost option or accommodated under the floor to save space.

Lower fuel costs and significantly cleaner emissions are coherent arguments that speak in favor of running your 2.0-l Volkswagen T5 on compressed natural gas.

No Worries on the Road
H-gas or L-gas? Not a problem. Thanks to perfected control-unit software, you can fill up at any natural-gas filling station without having to worry about gas quality. The cutting-edge control-unit software in the IAV system permits the use of H-gas and L-gas as well as mixtures of both in any ratio. The system can also run on biogas purified for automotive use.

Unrestricted Mobility
IAV´s bivalent concept retains the complete gasoline fuel system, including the 80-l (approx. 21 US gallons) gasoline tank. This extends the vehicle´s overall traveling range and possible uses too. It rules out restrictions if a CNG filling station is not available or the fuel pump is out of order. Traveling abroad is not a problem either. All this has a positive effect on the vehicle´s resale value. Gasoline mileage remains unaffected after conversion.

Quality and Safety
The quality of IAV´s conversion concept has been tested by Volkswagen AG and is confirmed in a VW Certificate of Nonobjection/VW Clearance Certificate. All components in the gas system are approved under ECE-R 110 (-40°C). The superstructure versions have ECE-R 115 certification and are therefore eligible for homologation throughout Europe. The EOBD system is fully operational in both operating modes.
