TeleDrive from IAV is a flexible system for the professional realisation of telematics/infotainment applications in the vehicle on the basis of PC and Internet technologies.

A complete Pentium-class multimedia PC with all of the usual PC interfaces is accommodated in the dimensions of a DIN-style car radio. The unit is also equipped with the components necessary for providing the infotainment functions featured in modern-day vehicles, such as radio tuner, GPS, GSM/GPRS, two CAN interfaces and a 4x20 W audio amplifier. Flexible in terms of equipment, the PC can be furnished with a variety of processor or RAM modules providing the optimum configuration for the application in hand. Depending on use, a flashcard or a proper hard disk is employed as the mass storage medium. Integrated power management conveniently allows the system to be operated without any problem in the vehicle.

Applications run under the Windows NT/NT Embedded operating systems. This means it is possible to install most applications operating under Windows. IAV also offers a program package that has been designed specifically for use on the road. Operation is by means of touch-screen display; intuitive user prompting obviates the need for any help function. Individual applications, such as Internet browser (IE5), navigation, electronic logbook, radio, CD, MP3 player, DVD player, telephone, e-mail, SMS, are integrated in the system as modular components. The applications communicate with each other using the XML mark-up language. This permits the complete integration of, for example, XML-based Internet services with navigation or the telephone, i.e. a telephone link or route calculation is retrieved straight from the browser. The integrated browser has been configured in such a way that it can also be used to run specific applications while the vehicle is travelling. The operating structure permits the later addition of a voice module. In this context, IAV is working with a partner on a dialog-oriented solution that takes every effort out of operating the MP3 player or navigation system.

The TeleDrive System provides various Internet-based services, such as a hotel or restaurant search function based on the vehicle's current position. In future, we will be extending the range of services together with company partners. Tailored applications, such as fleet management, can be realised very easily on an XML basis using Internet technologies. Far away from telematics/infotainment applications, the system can also be used in the field of vehicle measurement or for display purposes in prototypes or test vehicles. The many interfaces and the system's open concept leave the user wanting for nothing in this regard. Flexibility and efficiency permit the professional implementation of customer-specific projects in the field of telematics/infotainment. The open architecture enables existing software systems to be integrated with ease. The compact hardware can be integrated in the vehicle without difficulty.
