In our indoor crash-testing facility at Gifhorn, we can check adherence to all statutory requirements (such as ECE and FMVSS) and conduct all consumer tests, like US-NCAP and Euro-NCAP. Our crash track has a length of 130 meters and ends at a 90-tonne concrete block. Here, vehicles weighing up to 1,800 kilograms can be accelerated to a maximum speed of 120 kilometers an hour, In addition to head-on collisions, rear-end, side and pole crash tests can also be performed. Segregated prototype rooms in our workshop ensure maximum confidentiality – this is where we prepare the vehicles for testing and can repair them for further crash tests.
Numerical Simulations and a Sled System Reduce the Number of Tests
Before testing, our simulation specialists can optimize the crash behavior of new vehicles on the basis of numerical simulations – this allows us to avoid many crash tests and reduce the number of prototypes required in developing vehicles.
To configure a vehicle’s restraint systems, we can simulate collisions on a sled system – the deceleration forces on occupants, seats and interior components can be simulated by controlling deceleration without destroying an entire vehicle. Our sled facility is 95 meters long and is capable of decelerating masses weighing as much as 2,500 kilograms with a g-force up to 90.
