Energy Storage

Maintaining the balance between supply and demand in the power grid: This is the central task of future energy storage systems – without them we will not make the energy transition a success. This is why IAV is working on various options for efficiently buffering eco-friendly electricity. In this context we also build on our experience from automotive engineering: Hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanical energy storage systems are already found in motor sport and in buses. In future, they may also play a key part in smart grids.

This also applies to the second technology we are working on: Using CO2, hydrogen from “green” electricity can be converted into methane, the main constituent of natural gas. This “Power 2 Gas” process makes Germany’s well developed gas infrastructure available as an electricity storage system. Our expertise in thermodynamics, simulation and system control is particularly beneficial in this regard.
