The Path to CO2-neutral Mobility in 2050

16.05.2019  —

Vienna Engine Symposium (2019). Mobility must make a noticeable contribution to protecting the climate. It should be completely CO2-neutral by 2050. This is a huge technological challenge, but one for which solutions are already available. At this year’s Vienna Engine Symposium (May 15 to 17, 2019), IAV will be showing which technologies make a contribution to achieving this ambitious target.

Matthias Kratzsch, Chief Technology Officer at IAV, will be giving an overview of the various alternative drives and their specific advantages and drawbacks in his address entitled “The Path to CO2-neutral Mobility in 2050″. Together with battery electric and fuel cell vehicles, he will also be looking at combinations of combustion engines and synthetic power-to-X fuels (PtX). In order to obtain a fair comparison between the various concepts, the CO2 emissions are analyzed over the entire life cycle (LCA, Life Cycle Assessment) together with customer-relevant assessment variables such as vehicle costs (TCO, Total Cost of Ownership).

Many correlations were derived using IAV Mobility Synthesis. This specific tool makes it possible to capture entire mobility chains with their respective sensitivities to generate various scenarios and obtain objective comparisons, including infrastructure and customer preferences. “A well-founded look at the future must take account of all these influences with their trends and repercussions. That is exactly what the IAV Mobility Synthesis tool was developed for”, says Kratzsch. “The customer plays a key role in selecting the specific mobility concept from the range of available powertrains and fuels or energy sources before choosing the preferred mobility option for the necessary journeys.”

Visitors to the IAV booth in Vienna can look forward to a hands-on experience on the way towards the CO2-neutral mobility of tomorrow. They will see a timeline that illustrates technological developments, corresponding IAV solutions and the challenges that can probably be expected in the market of the future. Visitors are encouraged to contribute their own ideas and play a proactive role in shaping the timeline.

The IAV booth in Vienna will also be providing an insight into the not-so distant future with the “Powertrain 2025” exhibit brought to life with an AR application. Other exhibits include the innovative EMBATT high-voltage battery and the IAV electrolyzer. Both topics will also be featured in presentations at the IAV booth, together with IAV Mobility Synthesis, Powertrain 2025, AI-assisted engineering, life cycle assessment, the IAV e-drive, a diesel hybrid engine with ultra-low NOx emissions and other future technologies being developed at IAV for combustion engines.

Two other presentations being given in Vienna also feature IAV employees: “Reducing NOₓ emissions in real-world urban and motorway driving with optimized diesel powertrain” (Dr.-Ing. F. Bunar, Dipl.-Ing. J. Spitta, Dipl.-Ing. O. Friedrichs, A. Kuhrt M.Eng., Dr.-Ing. M. Brauer) and “DME/OME₁ – sustainable fuels for compression ignition combustion engines in applications for passenger cars and commercial vehicles” (Dipl.-Ing. M. Pannwitz, Dipl.-Ing. G. Lautrich, Dipl.-Ing. T. Tietze).
