Urban mobility is to become cleaner and quieter. This is why electric drives will soon become part of everyday inner-city life – not just in passenger cars but also in commercial vehicles such as buses, delivery vans and municipal fleets, as well as supply and disposal vehicles. Tassima from Berlin is a pioneer in this field. As from 2019, the company intends to put electric drives into vintage double- decker buses for Berlin's tourists. The electric drive components are supplied as a complete parts kit by IAV Cars GmbH. The parts kit is being developed with support from IAV engineers and partners and is integrated individually as a system in the respective vehicle, warranting smooth interaction of the electric drive with the other vehicle components.
The first operational prototype of a sightseeing double-decker bus retrofitted by Tassima with IAV Elocity can be seen and experienced at the Ziel-Abegg booth at the IAA Commercial Vehicles Motor Show. Visitors can take a virtual look inside the prototype on the outdoor area of the exhibition grounds: an augmented reality demo and a virtual reality headset will show the individual components and how they interact, from all perspectives.
“The operational prototype is an important milestone for IAV and our partners Tassima and Ziehl- Abegg Automotive. It demonstrates that we can offer a complete electric drive for commercial vehicles”, says Utz-Jens Beister, Managing Director of IAV Cars GmbH. “In the long term we want to increase our commitment and foster the use of electric commercial vehicles in Germany.” As part of this strategy, IAV Cars will be launching IAV Elocity mid 2019. The electric drive system can be tailored to every application. It is suitable for both retrofitting solutions and also for manufacturers of new vehicles seeking to get involved in electric mobility in minimum time without having to make their own engineering efforts.
Electric drives do more than improve the quality of air and life in urban areas. They also offer economic benefit for delivery companies, tradesmen, fleet operators and municipal companies: electricity is less expensive than diesel and thus brings down the total cost of ownership (TCO) for electric vehicles. IAV Elocity makes it easier than ever for fleet operators and OEMs to make a fast, low-cost start into the urban mobility of tomorrow.
The electric drive by IAV Cars consists of the following components:
- Axle including power electronics, supplied by Ziehl Abegg Automotive GmbH & Co. KG
- Traction battery with vehicle-specific capacity (145 kWh in this case)
- On-board charger
- DC/DC converter for converting high-voltage to low-voltage
- Traction power distributor
- Contactor box for high-voltage relay
- Display system for the driver (including battery state, status information)
- Auxiliary heating for driver and windows
- Control units for system control, diagnostics and drive information
- Power steering pump
- Air compressor for brakes, chassis and doors
- Water cooling for power electronics and compressors
The IAA Commercial Vehicles Motor Show takes place at Hanover exhibition grounds from September 20 to 27, 2018. The prototype of the electric sight-seeing double-decker bus can be found in the outdoor area at booth T145-T149.
