3-D printing is giving developers entirely new degrees of freedom in piston design and in defining the piston cooling concept. Beside weight savings of up to 25 percent, a more complex piston bowl recess design can optimize combustion processes. IAV uses pistons from 3-D printing as a development tool. Using iteratively enhanced piston designs, development cycles can be completed in a shorter time. Pistons for passenger car and commercial vehicle engines have demonstrated IAV’s expertise in designing and manufacturing 3-D printed pistons in practice. IAV is also investigating the potential for other components, such as cylinder heads.
