Autonomous Driving: Sensors for Success
Berlin. Sensors play a key role on the way to autonomous driving. But the choice and combination differ according to vehicle design and specific application and have to be defined accordingly already during the concept phase. Several factors are involved, including not just the efficiency or quality of the final driving function and the safety aspects. Due consideration also has to be given to component prices and restrictions in the context of vehicle integration, which impact on the choice of sensors for a certain autonomous vehicle concept and its intended applications.
At the eMove360° Europe (October 15 to 17 in Munich), IAV will be presenting simulation-based methods to assess and define types and combinations of sensors for autonomous vehicles. Antoine Frot, technical consultant for simulation and validation at IAV, will be presenting a paper entitled “Sensor set definition in the concept phase” at the accompanying conference. He will show how methods developed by IAV help to validate sensors at an early point in the development process, thus saving costs and reducing the time-to-market.
The approach begins by analyzing functional design and safety, as well as looking at the requirements for detecting the vehicle surroundings. The highly automatic process that also includes cloud computing makes it possible to validate every design concept on the basis of numerous scenarios in a short period of time. Several iterations then result in the optimum sensor set.
In addition, in the context of “simulation-based validation of AD systems”, IAV will also be presenting a 3D simulation tool at its exhibition booth (hall A6, booth 109) that is already being used successfully in the HEAT project.
